GE has received 15 reports - two of them in Canada, the rest in the U.S. - of an electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element. In seven cases, there was fire and smoke damage beyond the appliance itself. Three of those cases resulted in extensive property damage.
Health Canada said it had not received any reports of injury in this country.
More than 90,000 of the affected appliance were sold in Canada between March 2006 and August 2009. They have plastic tubs and controls on the front panel, and were sold in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel finishes.
GE has also recalled 1.3 million of the units in the U.S.
Several models of GE, GE Profile and Moffat brand units are listed in the recall. Find the affected model and serial numbers at the websites of Health Canada (hc-sc.gc.ca) and the Electrical Safety Authority (esasafe.com).
Customers who bought the dishwashers are advised to stop using them immediately and contact the manufacturer, MC Commercial (Mabe), for a free repair, at 1-888-943-5188.
