Guilty verdict reached at Shafia trial

KINGSTON - A jury has convicted Mohammad Shafia, his wife and his son of first-degree murder in the slayings of three of his daughters and another spouse.

Shafia, 59, the murdered girls' mother, Tooba Yahya, and their son, Hamed, are automatically sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

The Shafia sisters, Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, Geeti, 13, and their 52-year-old stepmother, Rona Amir, died June 30, 2009.

The jury deliberated for about 15 hours before rendering its verdict. Jurors heard from 58 witnesses and reviewed 160 exhibits.
