WINNIPEG - Michael Charles Parker, with the help of a friend, managed to make it from the parking lot of the Thriftlodge motel to his Winnipeg home before he ended up on the sidewalk, where paramedics tried to save his life.

He died a short time later, Winnipeg police said.
Parker, 33, and a buddy had spent some time inside the motel's bar Thursday night. The pair were making their way through the parking lot when they encountered the suspect, police said.

Police won't say what exactly what led to the altercation, other than ruling out one possibility.

"While there may be other motives, it does not look like robbery," said Const. Rob Carver.

One of Parker's relatives said he had been stabbed, but police have not said how he died. Homicide detectives do not want that detail revealed as they continue to seek out people who were in the area that night.

"They're still interviewing witnesses and they don't want to taint anything," said Carver.

One of Parker's neighbours said he is "stunned" about his death.

"He was a nice guy. Friendly," said Gerry McCasky, who said Parker lived with his girlfriend and mother.

Shane Kenneth Pruden, 40, of Winnipeg, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder. He is known to police.

It appears the man has been involved with the justice system since the early '90s.
