Almost half of Canadians would prefer to see Prince William become king, not his father, Prince Charles, a new survey has found.

The Angus-Reid poll found 47% of Canadians would like to see Prince William succeed the Queen, while 17% of Canadians said they want to see Prince Charles follow in his mother's footsteps.

But the online survey of 2,005 Canadians also found just 33% of respondents would prefer to see this country remain a monarchy, while 37% supported the idea of an elected head of state, and 20% said it doesn't matter to them.
The survey results noted the idea of an elected head of state is more popular among men, with 45% agreeing with the idea, compared to just 29% of women.

Prince William and his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, received high marks from Canadians, with 77% of Canadians saying they have a favourable opinion of him, and 73% saying they like her.

Queen Elizabeth followed closely behind with 70%, while Prince Charles got 34% and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, had 21% of Canadians who approve of her.
The survey comes on the heels of a royal visit by Prince Charles and Camilla. The couple are set to visit New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan on May 20 to 23 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Canadians were polled March 7 to 8 and the margin of error is 2.2 percentage points.
