VANCOUVER - A Chilliwack, B.C., is accused of wearing an RCMP uniform to steal a bank machine from a gas station.

Marc Joseph Cadieux, 41, has been charged with personating an officer, possessing weapon for dangerous purpose, theft over $5,000, and using an imitation firearm.

Police said two men entered a Shell gas station Friday evening, one dressed as a Mountie, and tried to remove the ATM machine. They were foiled by bolts fixing the machine to the floor.

The clerk, realizing something wasn't right, called police. The two men were arrested in a van shortly after.

RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said the uniform has been recovered, but Mounties are still investigating how it was obtained, and whether it is actually genuine.

"It's not often we have people wondering around pretending to be policemen in a police uniform," she said.

"You could ask for identification, it would probably help, ask for a badge and authentic RCMP or municipal police identification if you have any concerns."

While only one man has been charged, police are still investigating the second man.

Cadieux was on bail for two previous allegations when he was arrested.
