SARNIA, ON - A father who admitted to police he sexually assaulted his young teenage daughter has been sentenced to eight months in jail.

The man, in his early 30s, was convicted of sexual assault for touching his daughter's breasts and buttocks in 2010 and 201l, after she first went to her mother and to school officials with the allegations.

The age of the girl was not released, and the man's name cannot be published to protect the daughter's identity.

In her victim impact statement, the girl said her grades have dropped since being molested, she no longer trusts adults and she has difficulty sleeping. The family has broken up.

"I apologize to ... my family and friends. I've lost everything," the man said.

The pre-sentence report indicated the father had been a victim of sexual abuse as a child, but that doesn't excuse his behaviour, said Justice Deborah Austin. The jail time will be followed by three years probation and he will be on the sexual offender registry for 10 years.
