EDMONTON -- Details are beginning to emerge about the arrest of Travis Baumgartner, the man accused of killing three armoured car co-workers and critically wounding another during a bank machine heist at the University of Alberta early Friday.

"Mr. Baumgartner was arrested peacefully and without incident, which was the best outcome we could possibly hope for," said Edmonton police Supt. Bob Hassel said during a press conference midday Sunday.

"Currently we have a team of eight -- five investigators, three forensics investigators -- that flew in to Langley, BC last night. They are sifting through evidence including the suspect's vehicle as we speak."

The arrest took place at the Canada-U.S. border near Lynden, Wash., about 40 km south of Abbotsford, BC at 4:08 p.m. Saturday.

Baumgartner, 21, gave his Alberta driver's licence while attempting to cross the border with around $300,000 in cash when US Customs and Border Protection officials detained him. RCMP from Langley, BC, then arrived to make the arrest.

"We had a notification of a license plate, of identification, of his driver's licence. When you go through the border, I would assume that they probably read his license plate before he got to the crossing," said Hassel. "With a vehicle, in this day and age he could have been anywhere. That's why literally it was an international manhunt."

According to border guards, the arrest was a smooth one.
"He was surrounded by a half-dozen of our officers and taken into custody without incident," said Thomas Schrieber, chief customs and border enforcement officer at the Lynden crossing.

He explained the truck's licence plate was scanned before he even got to the crossing.

"We don't ask them how was their day," Schrieber said. "When they're flagged as a dangerous person, we immediately tell them to put their hands up."

Hassel said police have not yet recovered the body armour and weapon Baumgartner allegedly had on him but investigators had still not fully inspected the Ford F150 in which he was traveling.

Schrieber said border guards inspected the truck and no weapons were found.

Baumgartner is being charged with three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and four counts of robbery with a firearm. He is expected to be transported from Langley back to Edmonton within the next week.

"We have been in contact with all of the families involved, including Sandy Baumgartner, who is the mother of Travis. Everybody is now relieved that he is in custody," said Hassel said.

G4S Cash Solutions Canada guards Michelle Shegelski, 26, Brian Ilesic, 35, and Eddie Rejano, 39, were shot and killed. Matthew Schuman, another guard, was shot and remains in critical condition in hospital.

Another press conference has been scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. to update the public on the investigation.
