VANCOUVER -- An Abbotsford beekeeper has been stung to the tune of $100,000 by a group of experienced thieves who made off with half a million bees and an estimated 8,000 pounds of honey.

The brazen theft took place in the 27600 block of 0 Avenue sometime between July 7 and July 26, as the keeper did not inspect the hives on a daily basis.

However, during his last visit Thursday, the beekeeper was shocked to find almost 100 hive frames missing, along with almost all of his bees and honey.

Although the hives were situated well away from the road, Abbotsford police are certain there are witnesses due to the amount of equipment and transport needed to carry out the theft.

Police said the robbers also required a certain amount of expertise, as dealing with that number of bees is dangerous.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
