A 24-year-old man is dead after he accidentally fell off a 30-foot embankment while jogging in northwestern B.C. on Wednesday night, RCMP said.

Witnesses told RCMP that the man was jogging in Stewart on Highway 37A and crossed the road to avoid a large truck behind him shortly before 6:45 p.m. He then jumped over a concrete barrier possibly not aware of the steep drop on the other side.

"The male then fell approximately 30 feet onto the rocks below, as the local tide was out at that time," RCMP said in a release Friday night.

Witnesses did first aid on the unconscious man before paramedics arrived. He was retrieved from the rocky shore in a basket with a crane, and taken to hospital, however he died in hospital.

The Pitt Meadows, B.C., man was not identified at the request of his family, RCMP said.

Mounties and the BC Coroners Service is investigating.

Stewart is located near the Alaska border.
