BARRIE, ON — An 81-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly forced a young woman in his car in a rural area just west of Barrie and held her captive until she managed to escape, police said.

Ontario Provincial Police said a woman in her early 20s was walking near New Lowell when an elderly man driving a silver car pulled up behind her and forced her into his vehicle Sunday around 12:30 p.m.

"This guy came up behind her and stopped, grabbed her and a struggle ensued," Huronia West Const. Mark Kinney said. "She fought back, but he was still able to get her in the car."

The woman was held captive in the car while the man drove around until she was able to escape and call police.

Police said the suspect and woman didn't know each other.

The unidentified man from Collingwood, Ont., is charged with kidnapping and assault.
