A new mom was holding her two-day-old daughter when she was assaulted by the child's father, B.C. RCMP say.
Police were called to the maternity ward of a Nanaimo hospital on Saturday morning at 6:14 a.m., RCMP said in a release Tuesday.
The 27-year-old mother told police she was arguing with the man when, as she was holding her child, she was punched in the head. The woman said she placed the infant in the bassinet, then pushed the man out of the room.
The man then fled the scene.
Alcohol may have been a factor, police said.
The woman and baby were not injured.
The 30-year-old man was arrested for assault and breach of probation. The breach charge is due to a previous court order which prohibits him from drinking alcohol while in the presence of the victim.
