KENORA, ON. - A joint inquest into the deaths of seven aboriginal youths who died in Thunder Bay, ON, while attending school over the last decade is to take place next spring.

A specific date and location haven’t been determined by Ontario’s Office of the Chief Coroner, but the inquest — which will look into all seven deaths — will be held in spring 2013, said Dr. Andrew McCallum, Ontario’s chief coroner.

All the deaths were initially to be covered by individual investigations. However, a joint inquest was requested by Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the family of Reggie Bushie of Poplar Hill First Nation, who drowned in Thunder Bay in November 2007.

McCallum said the specifics of each death were similar enough a joint inquest was warranted.

All reportedly suffered from loneliness as a result of being isolated, and all died under mysterious circumstances.
