The now 18-year-old alleged victim was a patient at
Winnipeg's Children's Hospital in June 2009 when he says he awoke around 2 a.m. to find a man touching his penis and trying to insert a finger in his anus.
When a nurse walked in, the man moved his hands to the teen's stomach and pretended to examine him, the teen told court. The man and nurse left the room a short time later and the teen did not report the alleged assault.
"I felt scared and I just wanted to forget about it," he told court.
The teen was awakened a second time around 5 a.m. and saw the same man performing oral sex on him.
"I realized he was doing it and shut my eyes and tried to pretend it wasn't happening," he said. The teen said 10 or 15 minutes went by before he asked the man what he was doing.
"He stopped and started checking things, pushed on my stomach a couple of times," the teen said.
In a police video interview recorded later that morning, the boy said the man claimed he was checking to see if he had wet the bed.
"That obviously wasn't what he was doing," the teen told police.
When the man left the room a couple of minutes later, the teen clicked an alarm buzzer and told a nurse what had happened, he said.
Walid Ahmed Abdelhamid, 32, has pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault.
Abdelhamid worked at the hospital on a training visa and as a postgraduate resident doctor in the University of Manitoba's faculty of medicine.
Abdelhamid was immediately arrested and then fled the country following his release on bail. He was extradited from Greece in May 2011.
