MONTREAL - The suspect in Tuesday night's fatal shooting at the Parti Quebecois victory rally in Montreal is a respected businessman with no criminal record.

Richard Henry Bain, 62, was arrested at the scene after a man was shot dead during premier-elect Pauline Marois' victory speech at the Metropolis nightclub.

Police say the suspect also tried to set fire to the venue, but firefighters quickly extinguished the flames.
Bain has no criminal record and owns a fishing lodge in La Conception, Que., near Mont Tremblant. He's also a shareholder of another business near Labelle.

His colleagues describe him as hardworking and healthy, but one source told QMI Agency Bain is sick and is seeing a doctor.

Jean-Benoit Daigneault, who owns the La Conception helicopter company Heli-Tremblant, said he knew Bain to be a hard worker who always helped customers.

Police transported Bain under heavy guard to the Royal Victory Hospital Wednesday morning, but were tight-lipped as to why.

A technician was shot dead and another man was injured in the attack, which police suspect may have been an attempt on Marois' life. The shooting occurred during her victory speech.

"We never talked about politics. I never had the perception that he could have anything against Pauline Marois or Quebecers," Daigneault said.

Bain reportedly shouted "The English are waking up!" in French at TV cameras as cops dragged him away. Daigneault said Bain always spoke French to him.

Marie-France Brisson, director general in the municipality of La Conception, called Bain "very demanding" and said he was always applying for permits and making requests to expand his fishing lodge land.

But she said she's never known him to have any issues with the PQ or anger towards Quebecers.

Labelle Mayor Gilbert Brassard, who's known Bain for 30 years, said he never thought the businessman could be violent.

He said Bain always seemed mentally and physically healthy.

Cops said they found two guns on Bain the night of the shooting.

Brassard said Bain owns firearms because he loves to hunt.
