MONTREAL - Environment Canada confirmed that a tornado hit northeast of Montreal Saturday, causing significant damage in and around the city of Drummondville, QUE.

Aside from uprooting trees across the town, which is about 100 km northeast of Montreal, the tornado's 120 km/h winds ripped off part of the roof of a downtown building.

Rene Heroux of Environment Canada told QMI Agency that the winds were strongest at the height of the building's roof.

"Combined with the suction, the winds took part of the roof away," Heroux said. "It was a localized event."

Heroux said the tornado likely lasted about two minutes. There were no reported injuries.

About 13,000 homes in the region around Drummondville that lost power Saturday were expected to regain electricity by Sunday.

On average, six tornados hit Quebec every year. Saturday's tornado was the fifth so far this year, Heroux said.
