ST. CATHARINES, Ontario -- A coroner has been called to continue the investigation of a male body found floating in Martindale Pond near Henley Island Sunday afternoon.
Niagara Regional Police Insp. George Bench said a rower at a regatta in Port Dalhousie, Ontario noticed a body floating in the water and contacted police about 1:30 p.m.
Others at the regatta site said the body was found somewhere midway along the Henley Course on Martindale Pond.
The call to police came at about 1:30 p.m.
“We were able to secure the body,” Bench said at the scene, shortly after police asked people to leave the immediate area. The regatta was postponed following the body’s discovery.
“We’re waiting for the arrival of the coroner,” Bench said. “At this point the investigation is in its early stages and there’s no specific information I can give you at this point."
When asked if it might be a missing person from the area, Bench said, “it could be anyone at this point.”
