OTTAWA - A veteran Ottawa police officer has been temporarily demoted for using police databases dozens of times to find information on a former lover’s partner and friends dozens of times over three years.

Staff Sgt. Lyse Fournier was demoted to the rank of sergeant for seven months at a proceeding on Wednesday.

Fournier had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of insubordination under the Police Services Act.

Fournier accessed Canadian Police Information Centre and Record Management System records 169 times for non-employment related reasons between January 2005 and December 2008, according to an agreed statement of facts.

“It appears she simply became enmeshed in her own pursuit of these matters to such an extent that she was blinded to her clear obligations to this police service,” said hearing officer Terence Kelly. “One can only hope Staff Sgt. Fournier will use this experience as an opportunity for learning and personal growth.”
