A Tim Hortons customer in Halifax who rides on an electric scooter is rattled because the restaurant near his home has suddenly denied serving him coffee in the drive-thru due to safety issues.

Bernard Barrett told the Chronicle Herald he frequently goes to the Tim Hortons drive-thru near his Spryfield, NS, home on his four-wheeled scooter that he requires to get around.

But on Wednesday morning his regular routine to get his wife a cup of java was abruptly put to a halt when an employee at the window told Barrett it would be his last coffee at the drive-thru.

"I looked at her in shock," Barrett told the Herald. "I just shook my head and drove away."

He wasn't given a reason, so Barrett thought he may have been discriminated against and called the local newspaper.

Tim Hortons spokesman David Morelli told the Herald that the store shouldn't have served him in the drive-thru to begin with and corporate policy has always restricted non-licenced, non-motorized vehicles to prevent injuries.

"I'd rather be talking about preventing someone from going through than talking to you about somebody who went through and unfortunately got hurt," Morelli said.

Barrett said he understands, but he's not going to go to Tim Hortons anymore.
