TORONTO - A lunch lady in Toronto faces charges for allegedly attacking a group of students in a schoolyard.

Police say they responded to an assault call over the noon-hour Thursday at Essex Public School, in the city’s west end.

“Kids were out in the schoolyard and a lunch supervisor allegedly went out there and assaulted a number of them,” Const. Tony Vella said Friday of the bizarre incident.

He said the students were on their lunch break and had gone outside after eating.

“The school’s principal and vice-principal intervened and fortunately nobody was seriously hurt,” Vella said. “None of the students required medical attention.”

Karla Martinez, of Toronto, was arrested at the school, which has classes from junior kindergarten up to Grade 8.

The 34-year-old lunch lady is charged with five counts of assault.

Details were not released and staff at the school refused to comment Friday.
