LONG PLAIN FIRST NATION, Man. - Police have arrested three men after a body was discovered in a ditch near a burning vehicle Wednesday night.
RCMP said three men - ages 20, 21, and 47 - are in custody in connection with the homicide on the reserve, located southwest of Portage la Prairie, Man., after a body was found in a ditch. A bloody baseball bat was also reportedly located near the body.
Mounties created a perimeter around the scene around a home. A Long Plain resident said a fight broke out near the home among several men, including one armed with a bat.
Long Plain Chief David Meeches said the First Nations community is shocked by the homicide.
"I think everybody is in shock and everybody is kind of bewildered by what is happening. We continue to communicate with people. Nobody else is at risk," said Meeches. "Our heart goes out to the families involved.
"All we can do is continue to be supportive to everybody that witnessed it and everybody that's been affected by it."
Meeches is not aware of the identity of the suspects as there is much speculation going on within the community.
"As far as we know so far there is a person who lost their life who is not from Long Plain First Nation," said Meeches. "A lot of the information we have received is word of mouth right now."
Mounties continue to investigate the killing. Charges have not yet been laid.
