WINNIPEG - A young man is charged with second-degree murder in a homicide on Manitoba's Long Plain First Nation.

The body of the 24-year-old man, from Portage la Prairie, MB, was found in a ditch near a burning vehicle Wednesday night.

RCMP said Friday the killing happened during a fight between several people. Two other men suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Cody Alexander Schmidt, 21, of Long Plain was arrested Thursday. He is set to appear in Portage la Prairie provincial court on Jan. 7.

Two other men, aged 20 and 47, were also arrested Thursday but have since been released without charges.

Mounties are not releasing the cause of death. A bloody baseball bat was reportedly located near the body.

A Long Plains resident said Thursday one of the men involved in the melee had been armed with a baseball bat.
