RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk confirmed one member from a group of skiers died when the avalanche came down on them while they were out of bounds at Revelstoke Mountain Resort.
Police said three skiers were buried by the slide in the Greely Lake area.
Two of the buried skiers were rescued by others in the group but the third was found dead, police said.
Unconfirmed reports cited by local media say there were five people in the group, and that CPR was attempted on the deceased before the other four headed back inbounds.
The body of the deceased is scheduled to be recovered Saturday, police said.
Friday afternoon, the Canadian Avalanche Centre website had the risk of avalanche in the Revelstoke area and much of the rest of the South Rockies listed as high.
