Two people were shot in the ensuing struggle at the TD Bank on St. Clair Ave. at Jane St. -- a 22-year-old female teller and the indignant 54-year-old male customer who later chased the suspects into the parking lot, where he was shot in the abdomen.
Having lost his spleen and parts of his kidney and pancreas, the man is recovering in hospital. The female teller was shot in the thigh and is also expected to survive.
The Canadian Bankers Association is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman and his criminal sidekick.
Toronto Police Staff-Insp. Mike Earl said while the male victim made an "instinct call on his own," others should not do the same.
"Our recommendation to the public is very seriously to co-operate with somebody who points a gun at you," he said at a news conference Monday.
In a violent takeover-style robbery, the two young men terrorized customers and employees at the bank around 12:20 p.m. Sunday.
Only one was armed. Both were unmasked and managed to escape in a stolen vehicle with a small undisclosed amount of money and the male victim's iPhone. Police confirmed a dye pack exploded at the scene but it is unclear how much money was stained.
The stolen car was later found abandoned in the west end.
Earl said he believes the two men are still in the GTA and chances are high someone will recognize them.
"You can make money on tips anonymously if you don't want to come forward," he said.
Canadian Bankers Association spokesman William Crate said about 90% of bank robbers are apprehended by police.
"If you do rob a bank, ultimately the odds are pretty high that you're going to get caught," he said.
Last year, there were 591 bank robberies in Canada.
Staff at the TD bank that was robbed resumed business Monday.
The suspects are described as two black males in their 20s. One was armed with a silver handgun and was wearing a black hoodie, a black Chicago White Sox cap, and faded blue jeans.
The other was dressed in a grey quilted North Face vest, blue jeans, grey high-tops and wore a baseball cap under his hood.
