THUNDER BAY -- A local man was attacked Saturday by a mature black bear in Sandbar Lake Provincial Park northeast of Ignace, Ont.
The OPP said the 42-year-old man told them he was camping at the park and was out for a walk with his two dogs.
He stopped near the water to take a break when he was attacked from behind by the bear.
The man was able to get away and waited in the water until the bear retreated. He then tried to make it back to his campsite.
The bear attacked again and one of the dogs attempted to protect his owner and fend off the bear. The man managed to safely get away and made it to the park ranger station where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
OPP Const. Erin Huckell said the bear was shot by park officials Saturday but was not immediately located.
On Monday morning, provincial park officials confirmed they had caught the bear.
The trails surrounding the park remain closed until officials complete their investigation.
