Every time Canadians look up this summer they see an even brighter Sun.
No, this is not one of those mainstream media scare stories about global warming -- it is simply more evidence Sun News Network is climbing in the Canadian TV landscape.
In fact, the rookie Sun News battered CTV News Channel Aug. 18, by bettering it in every time slot between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. This counts as the first stretch of BBM Canada viewership ratings victories for Sun News sustained over a nine-hour run.
In addition to the Sun's dominance over CTV News Channel in that period, Sun News topped CBC News Network with its Canada Live, Daily Brief, Byline and Charles Adler programs.
Sun News spokesman Luc Lavoie was proud and pumped up by the surging numbers. Saying the network success is ahead of schedule, Lavoie predicted even better numbers to come as the broadcast reach expands.
"The incredible thing about these ratings is that they are rising so fast despite Sun News being available to fewer Canadians than CTV News Network and CBC," Lavoie said. "You can imagine how well Sun News will do when Bell gets on board and carries our network. Clearly, Canadians want access to an alternative voice for news and commentary."
Bell is the parent company of CTV.
The prime time talk programs continue to do well compared to when they launched in April and to their competitors on other networks.
On August 18, Byline with Brian Lilley had a combined prime time and replay audience of almost 120,000 viewers, according to BBM. Lilley's aggressive and engaging style and no-nonsense approach to championing populist causes has made him a favorite of the prime time lineup.
And the evenings are set to get even brighter Aug. 30 with the debut of The Arena, with Michael Coren. The new show will debut at 7 p.m. ET and promises to be a no hold's barred look at the issues that really shape the world we live in.
