Painkillers recalled over child hazard

QMI AGENCY

Health Canada announced a recall of over-the-counter painkillers because of fears children could access the pills and overdose.

Vita Health Products recalled 500 mg bottles of Compliments Extra Strength Acetaminophen Gelcaps.

"The products are being recalled because its packaging suggests the product is child resistant but the product has been packaged with a non-child-resistant cap," a Health Canada statement says.

"As such, there is no child safety mechanism, which presents a risk to children who are able to open the bottle and ingest the product."

Children under 12 who accidentally take acetaminophen could suffer overdose and suffer liver damage. Early signs of overdose include nausea, vomiting, lethargy and sweating.
