She looks at the expensive sneakers you're ready to pay for.
"You got these out of the 50% off bin, right?" she asks.
You didn't. But you have a split-second decision to make.
Neurons fire and calculations made.
And you're considering saying something like, "I think so, yah."
Well, it's a pretty sleazy move, but you may have something other than just poor morals and a full credit card to blame.
New research adds to a theory that a lack of time may be on the side of liars.
A study released in the journal Psychological Science finds quick, off-the-cuff decisions may short-circuit our conscience.
A team from the University of Amsterdam and Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev had test subjects roll dice for cash. They rolled three times and then reported the first number they rolled. The higher the number the more money they got.
But some were also put under a 20-second window to report their first roll.
Knowing the odds, researchers were able to calculate how many people lied. Those under the clock fibbed more than those with no time restraints -- though that group lied as well.
Shaul Shalvi, an ethical and behaviour expert at the University of Amsterdam tells QMI Agency: "Our theory suggests that when people know that their privacy is secured and have to act quickly they will attempt serving their self-interest at all costs, even if this requires lying.
"When more time is available, people take into account how other people (society) as well as themselves expects them to behave and restrains their lies."
Shalvi believes there's an evolutionary logic to lying.
"When a person is walking hungry in the market, he will do whatever he can to survive, potentially also by stealing some food," he said.
When time is ample they can be restrained, as they know it is not acceptable behaviour.
The researcher adds the results show people rationalize lies and, "If they cannot come up with a reason to lie, they will avoid lying altogether."
So take the sneakers at half-off, and blame evolution and bad timing.
But you may also want to replace those burning pants as well.
