Vancouver, British Columbia.
VANCOUVER -- Being No. 1 isn’t always a good thing.
Vancouver is rated North America’s most expensive city in a cost-of-living survey conducted by a company that helps place employees around the world.
It’s the second consecutive year Vancouver received the dubious distinction by ECA International.
Vancouver is ranked 35th globally, followed by Manhattan.
Two Japanese cities lead the top-50 list. Tokyo is No. 1 followed by Nagoya. Oslo, Norway, is No. 3.
Ottawa is ranked 37, while Toronto is 40.
In conducting the survey ECA used a basket of day-to-day goods and services. Included is food; alcohol and tobacco costs; clothing and meals out.
The survey does not take costs like rental accommodation, utilities, buying a car or school fees into consideration.
