Five brands of dog food recalled

Health Canada has recalled five brands of dry dog food because of fears it may be contaminated with salmonella.

Dog owners should avoid Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise and Karma with an expiration date of March 22, 2014, or earlier. About 442,960 bags were sold nationwide.

There have been no reports of illness.

People can become infected with salmonella by handling the pet food or feces, even if the animals show no symptoms.

Salmonella poisoning can cause diarrhea, fever, cramps, nausea, vomiting, chills and headaches.

In healthy people, symptoms last four to seven days. However, pregnant women, children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at risk of developing serious complications and may need to be given intravenous fluids.

In a small number of cases, it can be fatal.
