TORONTO - Mayor Rob Ford made a surprise appearance at a flag raising for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia at City Hall Thursday.

It is the first gay pride-related event Ford has attended as mayor of Toronto.

Ford had earlier declined an invite from the Toronto chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) to attend the rainbow flag-raising ceremony.

The mayor had faced heavy criticism for refusing to attend the event and for turning down an invite to march in Toronto's Pride parade.
