MONTREAL - The most famous student protester in Quebec has resigned his duties as co-spokesman for Coalition large de l'Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante (CLASSE), the largest student federation in the province.

Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, 22, the telegenic student leader who became instantly recognizable across the province since the student strike started more than six months ago, wrote in a resignation letter made public Wednesday night that the movement needs "new faces."

The news comes as the student movement is starting to show signs of slowly ending.

The letter called out Premier Jean Charest for being "violent and contemptuous towards Quebec and its youth."

Nadeau-Dubois said his only regret is that he left his position while Charest is still running the province.

Nadeau-Dubois' resignation came after students started voting against boycotting classes.

Students at two of the more militant colleges voted on Wednesday to temporarily stop striking. However, other schools have voted to carry on.

Moreover, the head of the association of colleges told reporters Wednesday that if students vote to continue striking, even for one week, their semesters will be cancelled entirely.

"We have played our last card," said Jean Beauchesne. "There are no other alternatives."

Students enrolled in a cancelled semester could receive a failing grade, seriously affecting their chances at getting accepted in university.
