WINNIPEG -- A Manitoba senator's wife arrested after an alleged air-rage outburst was released from jail Monday and ordered to stay away from her husband, according to Saskatchewan court documents.

Maygan Sensenberger, 23, is accused of causing a disturbance on an Air Canada flight from Halifax to Saskatoon on Thursday. Her Monday court date coincided with her first wedding anniversary to 69-year-old Manitoba Sen. Rod Zimmer, who was appointed to the Senate in 2005 by former Liberal prime minister Paul Martin.

Sensenberger was accused of uttering threats against her husband and will appear in domestic violence court on Tuesday.

Some witnesses reported she yelled repeatedly that her husband was ill and appeared genuinely concerned about his health.

Court documents allege she endangered the safety of other passengers, threatening to "take down the aircraft."

University of Winnipeg political scientist Allen Mills described Zimmer as a former backroom Liberal who spent plenty of time fundraising for the party.

He said the senator, who was also a neighbour, has had serious health issues.

"He had a very serious brush with cancer about three years ago. He was at death's door and managed to get into remission," said Mills, who was unaware of further details of the illness.

Mills said it's unclear how coverage of the young wife's arrest will affect the senator's reputation, since he's not accused of contributing to the disturbance.

"In some ways, he's an innocent in all this. I'm sure he wishes it hadn't happened," Mills said.

Mills said the unprecedented focus on the ages of Zimmer and his wife indicate the romance could alter preconceptions Canadians have of their senators.

"It's good to know 69-year-old senators are attractive enough to attract a 23-year-old woman," Mills said. "Senators are often thought of as of the geriatric set that gave up sex years ago."

Zimmer was reportedly found to be in good health after the flight, when Sensenberger was arrested.

Sensenberger's release conditions include not contacting or living with her husband and residing with the senator's brother, Wayne Zimmer.

She must not consume alcohol or enter a licenced premise, such as a bar, pub or lounge. Restaurants are exempt.

Zimmer's office did not return a call for comment Monday.
