VANCOUVER — Long-serving MLA John van Dongen has resigned from the BC Conservatives after party members voted against a leadership review Saturday.

Members voted 70% against holding the review for leader John Cummins, whose only sitting MLA was van Dongen, after the latter defected from the BC Liberals in March.

Van Dongen, representative for Abbotsford South, will continue sitting as an independent.

“I cannot carry on with a leader who probably doesn’t care whether I stay or go,” he told reporters Saturday.

Cummins appeared to downplay the resignation, citing the support of his other party members at the Langley general meeting.
