OTTAWA - Saudi millionaires who flout Canadian laws by arriving with multiple wives will be kicked out if immigration authorities find they lied about their polygamous relationships.

Officials at Immigration Minister Jason Kenney's office responded to a QMI Agency report Monday about a surge of oil-rich Saudi men wanting to make Canada home - some of whom subscribe to an interpretation in the Qur'an that encourages multiple marriages.

Under the Criminal Code, polygamy is outlawed in Canada.

"Polygamy is illegal in Canada. It is contrary to Canadian values and has no place in our country," said Kenney spokesperson Alexis Pavlich.

Through an access-to-information request, QMI found that Foreign Affairs officials at the Canadian Embassy in Saudi Arabia have been lied to or deceived by tycoons about their marital status when applying to come to Canada on any number of visa programs before seeking to stay permanently.

Pavlich said the law couldn't be clearer - Canadian immigration laws do not allow polygamists to immigrate to Canada.

"We know that there are people who will try to deceive our border officers by concealing their polygamous relationships, but we are committed to doing what we can to stop these people from entering Canada and, where we find that our immigration laws have been broken, to kick them out of our country."
