VANCOUVER -- BC's old provincial sales tax is one step closer to making its return after legislators in BC passed a bill through the committee stage debate Tuesday evening.

The bill would reinstate the old PST after British Columbians voted in a referendum to get rid of the harmonized sales tax in 2011.

The bill still needs royal assent, but the PST is set to make its return April 1.

Businesses will then revert to the old hybrid system of charging both PST and GST, however, there will be exemptions made for certain items such as electronic books, smoke alarms and restaurant meals.
