MONTREAL - The widow of former boxing champion, Arturo Gatti, settled out of court in May with a man who claimed he was "disfigured and handicapped" by her late husband, QMI Agency has learned.

Floridian Nestor Fernandez sued Amanda Rodrigues for $5 million. He claimed in court that Gatti "was drunk and looking for a fight" outside a restaurant in Fort Lauderdale in April 2009.

Fernandez said he suffered fractures to his head and nose after the Montrealer allegedly "sucker-punched" him in the head.

Rodrigues claimed that her late husband defended himself after being attacked. The fight between the two men took place three months before Gatti was found dead in a condo in Brazil.

The terms of the settlement have not been released and QMI was unable to reach Rodrigues, 25, for comment.

Rodrigues was awarded Gatti's mini-fortune of roughly $3.5 million in September 2011, after the boxer died in Brazil in 2009. Gatti's family argued in court that Rodrigues controlled and manipulated Gatti into signing a 2009 will that disinherited his family and left everything to her.

Rodrigues was soon back in court after Gatti's former lover and mother of his first child accused her of being responsible for the death of the boxer. The New Jersey court ruled in February that it did not have the jurisdiction to hear the case.

Rodrigues was arrested and held for 18 days after Gatti was found dead in 2009. She was released after Brazilian police concluded that Gatti committed suicide. However, members of Gatti's family have said they do not believe that Gatti killed himself
