A British man will spend his first wedding anniversary behind bars after being sentenced to six years in prison for deliberately setting fire to his wedding venue on the night of his wedding last June.

Max Kay, 37, admitted he started the blaze at the Peckforton Castle Hotel on June 19, the BBC reported.

Court heard Kay was "massively" drunk and had argued over the bar tab and the rest of the wedding bill, the broadcaster reported Wednesday. He had drank about 20 double vodkas and had warned the hotel staff that the venue's finance director was going to "get it." Earlier in the day, he and his wife argued about money still owed to the venue.

During sentencing, Judge Roger Dutton said Kay tried to host an expensive wedding (costing the equivalent of nearly $40,000) after he went bankrupt and couldn't afford the ceremony.

Almost 120 people had to flee when the fire broke out.
