A two-year-old "miracle" boy in Utah died after accidentally shooting himself with his father's gun.

Linkin Leatham's life "began and ended with great adversity," reads the obituary in the Provo Daily Herald. His birth was accompanied by multiple unspecified medical complications that kept him in hospital for two months before he "stunned" everyone with his quick recovery.

"He was a miracle from the beginning, a fighter from the moment he entered this world," wrote his parents, Melinda and Owen, in the obit.

The county attorney's office is investigating but only as a matter of routine, as officials are confident the death was "a tragic accident," deputy attorney Tim Taylor told KSL.com. The handgun was left out "basically at eye level," and the boy was curious, Taylor said.

It was not the service weapon belonging to Owen, who is a cop.

Both parents were in the home at the time of the accident, but neither witnessed it, the report said.

Linkin "tragically died in his parents' arms," they wrote in the obituary. His heart and corneas have been donated.
