The U.S. Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the deadly sinking of the Nova Scotia-built HMS Bounty off the U.S. East Coast during hurricane Sandy.

The tall three-masted ship sank Monday in rough seas off the coast of New Jersey. Crew member Claudene Christian was pulled from the water but was pronounced dead in hospital. The coast guard suspended the search for the captain, Robin Walbridge, on Thursday.

Investigators will look into any potential faulty equipment, negligence by the crew members or any government responsibility that may have contributed to the sinking, the coast guard said in a statement Friday.

The investigation's purpose is for "promoting safety of life and property" and not to determine criminal responsibility, the coast guard said.

The replica ship was used in the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
