VANCOUVER -- Foul play is suspected in the disappearance of a 21-year-old Vancouver woman in Los Angeles.

LA police said Elisa Lam was alone on a leisure trip and was last seen at a downtown hotel. It's unclear when she was going to check out, but her final destination was supposed to be Santa Cruz, CA.

Police believe she arrived in LA on Jan. 26 or 28.

"She has been out of contact with her parents for at least five days," LAPD spokesman Richard French said. "That has been incongruent with her behaviour in the past. She is completely out of contact with family."

Lam's parents are in LA to assist in the search. Police wouldn't comment on why they believe foul play was a factor.
