A British politician has revealed that until she was 23 years old, she lived as a gay man.
In a new book, Nikki Sinclaire says she is the country's first sex-change parliamentarian.
She had gender reassignment surgery in 1995.
But the 45-year-old member of the We Demand a Referendum NOW party also told the U.K. Sun newspaper that after a brutal rape in 1999, she became "anti-men" and started to find herself attracted to women.
She said she was attacked near midnight while she was walking home in central London.
"It was the most horrendous experience of my life," she told the newspaper.
She said her first lesbian sexual experience happened after meeting a woman at a bar.
"We were playing pool and got speaking. One thing led to another, which is unusual in the lesbian community. It was a wow moment, the best sex I'd had in my life," she told the newspaper in an exclusive interview.
But she admitted she wasn't sure about her new desires.
"I'll admit that at the time I didn't know if I could cope with being gay again - I wanted to live an ordinary life," she said.
Sinclaire received many Facebook and Twitter messages supporting her after she revealed the details about her life.
"I have the best Twitter followers - so much support," she tweeted.
